“Until that solid gold is in your hand, you won’t be happy”
This is what Real Estate singer Martin Courtney declares on the first track off of their 2009 self-titled debut.
“Beach Comber” is both a bouncy pop song and a tale quiet desperation. A paradox of sorts. You may feel a sense of warm comfort as you listen to the lingering melody, bouncy rhythm and the tasteful guitar fills. The lyrics, however, lead you to a different feeling once you realize that the protagonist of the song is never going to find that Rolex with his metal detector. It’s the promise of the American Dream wrapped up in a wondrous four and a half minute pop song.
